Later follows Instagram’s official API requirements. These requirements determine which Instagram content formats can be published automatically, which features require notification publishing, and which actions must be completed directly in Instagram.
This article explains common Instagram publishing restrictions in Later and what to do when a feature isn’t available through Auto Publish.
Why Instagram Publishing Restrictions Exist
Later is an official Instagram partner and follows Instagram’s platform requirements. These requirements help protect your Instagram account and ensure publishing is secure.
As a result, some Instagram features are only available in the Instagram app. When a feature can’t be added through Auto Publish, you may need to use notification publishing instead.
For step-by-step instructions, see Publish Instagram Posts Using Notification Publishing.
Features That May Require Notification Publishing
Some Instagram-native features must be added directly in Instagram before publishing.
Use notification publishing if you need to add:
- Trending audio: audio from Instagram’s music or audio library
- Sound effects: Instagram-native sound effects
- Stickers: Story stickers or other Instagram-native stickers
- Polls and quizzes: interactive Story elements
- Effects and filters: Instagram-native creative effects
- Automatic captions: captions generated in Instagram
- Other native editing tools: features only available in Instagram’s editor
When using notification publishing, Later sends a notification to your mobile device at the scheduled time. You’ll open the post in Instagram, add any Instagram-native features, and finish publishing there.
Auto Publish Restrictions
Auto Publish is available for supported Instagram content when Instagram allows partner tools like Later to publish that format automatically.
Some posts may require notification publishing instead because of the content type, media format, account type, or Instagram-native features included.
If Auto Publish isn’t available for your post, schedule it using Send Notification and finish publishing in Instagram.
Instagram Reels Restrictions
Some Reel features are only available in Instagram.
Use notification publishing if your Reel includes:
- Trending audio: audio from Instagram’s music or audio library
- Unsupported audio: audio that Instagram doesn’t allow partner platforms to auto-publish
- Instagram-native effects: effects, captions, stickers, or other edits added in Instagram
Auto Published Reels support original audio only.
Instagram Stories Restrictions
Some Story features can only be added in Instagram.
Use notification publishing if your Story includes:
- Music
- Stickers
- Polls
- Quizzes
- Links
- Interactive elements
- Instagram-native effects
If a Story option isn’t available in Later, schedule the Story using Send Notification and complete the final edits in Instagram.
Instagram Carousel Restrictions
Instagram supports up to 20 media items in a carousel post when publishing directly in Instagram. Through third-party partner platforms like Later, carousel posts are limited to 10 media items.
Carousel posts scheduled through Later also use a single caption for the entire post. Instagram is rolling out support for individual captions on carousel images and videos. We’re working to bring support for individual carousel captions to Later. Check back here for updates.
Collaborative Post Restrictions
Instagram only shares certain collaborative post data with the profile that originally created the post.
Because of this:
- Visual Instagram Planner: Collaborative posts you’re invited to may not appear in Later
- Link in Bio: Collaborative posts only appear in Link in Bio for the profile that originally created the post
- Analytics: Collaborative posts may not appear in Later Analytics for invited collaborators
This behavior is controlled by Instagram and can’t be changed by Later.
Facebook and Instagram Cross-Posting
Automatic cross-posting from Facebook to Instagram isn’t supported through Later.
If you want the same content to appear on both platforms, schedule separate posts for Facebook and Instagram.
