Alternative text (or alt text) is a short description that appears in place of an image or video. Alt text is used to:
- describe the image or video for people with visual impairments
- replace an image or video if it fails to load
Adding useful and clear alt text to all the media items in your posts ensures your content is accessible to all.
Important:
- Scheduling alt text is available through Later on the web (not available yet on mobile)
-
Alt text is available for scheduling posts to Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Twitter
- Alt text is currently not available for scheduling posts to Instagram and TikTok
How to Schedule Alt Text to Posts
To write alt text for a specific post, start by going to Later on the web.
- Create a post or open an existing scheduled post
- In the Post Builder, click Add Alt Text
-
Write or paste a description
- If there are multiple images or videos, go through them and write a description for each one
- Click Save Alt Text
You can also schedule alt text for multiple profiles at the same time, and customize it for each post.
- Multi-Profile schedule a post
-
For each social profile, click Add Alt Text
- This option will only show up for profiles that allow alt text scheduling
-
Write or paste a description
- If there are multiple images or videos, go through them and write a description for each one
- Click Save Alt Text
How to Add Alt Text to an Image or Video in Media Library
You can also add alt text directly to an image or video uploaded to your Media Library. If a post is created using media with alt text already added, the Post Builder will prepopulate your alt text for you.
- Select a media item from your Side Library
- In the Alt Text section, click Add
- Write or paste a description
- Click Update
Note: If a post is created using media with alt text already added to a profile that's not compatible with alt text scheduling (Instagram, TikTok), this will be copied to the caption when you create posts. This is called a media description.
